ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

Something a bit odd happened on my last (failed) run.

I went to Derth for the Storming the City quest, and started dealing with the intruders. There were a few Derth citizens standing around, including a named one. Suddenly, they all unexpectedly started attacking me, even though they were still in peril from the gwelgoroths. I killed off my own golem because I couldn't think of any other way of keeping him from retaliating, and kept taking out the gwelgoroths, hoping that saving the town would make the locals realise I wasn't an enemy.

It didn't. I got the "Thank you for taking out those things" message when I took down the last gwelgoroth, but all the other halflings still hated my guts. I didn't attack back, but the named one set a bunch of shadows on me nonetheless. My teleport rune cooled down just in time for me to teleport into the river and avoid being the victim of a lynch mob.

The last time I checked -- post-completion of the Storming the City quest -- they were all still out for my blood. What on earth could have happened to make me a persona non grata in an entire town, and the town I was doing my best to save, at that?

You inflicted damage on somebody perhaps?

Are you by any chance an undead? Other than that you might have hit the halflings by accident with an AoE or something turning them hostile.

Or, as you mentioned, you had a Golem that may have accidentally hit them with an attack. But why they'd go instantly hostile, aside from being undead, is beyond me.

If you are an undead, do you wear the cloak? Otherwise, everybody hates you...

I was playing a Necro once when this happened. One of my undead summons was super low on health, so I killed him so I could summon another before doing the Arena. Killing my own summon was enough to turn the entire town hostile.
