When there is a new patch only the chars that i create now will suffer the patch?
If so, should i abandon my others chars for good or what?

I think that you can continue your char on the new patch.

Depends on the update. Some will break the old saves while others won't.
Nothing forces you to update to later version if you still have ongoing chars.
What I'm doing is I have few different game directories each holding different version of the game so I can play my old chars still. Mostly I just abandon the really old ones though.

Apparently on Windows this is untrue. The game updates itself automatically even if you have saved chars. There has been a lot of complaining in the in-game chat about this (or I just happened to be playing at the right time to see it).

No, the game doesn't automatically update unless you tell it to.

Steam may be at fault, with it's auto updates and all.

That would be it, I believe.
The Windows
I use will never update on its own, nor does it give the option to let it.
I
think its the same with Mac and Linux builds. I'm... No expert there, though.

You can turn off automatic updates.
The T Engine launcher only downloads an update if you tell it to.

Ye, autoupdate doesn't even work with Linux or Mac, but you have to actually download the new version yourself manually.
This might be a big stretch but wonder if it would even be possible for the game to store old version files in some override directory from which it would use the files for corresponding save files.
In practice the game would detect the version the save file was created for and it would have a list of incompatible versions. If it detects an incompatible save file with current game version it would use old version overrides instead, making sure the game runs with the old save.
Of course there'd be a big warning saying "This save runs on old version X! As long as you play this char you cannot benefit from new version improvements."
Ultimately of course all the saves would convert to working format, i.e. if your old save wouldn't work with your current game version it would change some old stuff to match the new version improvements.
Then again there's pretty much only one dude making the game and he has enough stuff to do already without this issue here. It's not overly hard to play your old chars till the end before updating the game to new version. After all I believe most players tend to play one chat through before starting a new one instead of having one constantly played save for each class.
On the update dialogue it would be nice too get an info pop-up telling if the new version is save compatible with your old version.
