Console Mode, or, can I play this as a blind person?

Hi All,

I'm very new to the world of Tome, but have become intrigued by what I've read thus far. My only problem is that I also happen to be totally blind. I'm able to play any games which use Curses or the Linux console for display, such as the original Angband or, indeed, older versions of Tome. The current distro doesn't seem to support this, however.

What I'm wondering is how hard such a version would be to create? I would hate to be barred from playing such a wonderful game simply because the technology was not accessible. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much for listening, and I'm happy to clarify anything. :)

Hi

Sadly the game rendering is deeply linked to OpenGL processing, there is nearly no possibility to add a curses mode :/
Even if the map could be switched to ascii mode and outputed to curses the UI itself is made of textures & such that cant be converted :/

Thanks for getting back so quickly. This is disheartening news, but not unexpected.

Any other solutions which might help probably require more work than is feasible, so back to admiring this game from afar I go. Here's hoping…

Would ADOM work? Between what used to be and what is now, both TOME and ADOM seem to be kind of, but not quite, the same thing.

Were you born blind or did it get you later in life (I'm low vision from birth.)

Adom is indeed quite accessible. My one major complaint is its assuming a numeric keypad.
I haven't had a laptop with one of those for years, and the FN-key solutions never suited me.

As for my blindness, I was born at 25 weeks, so it's definitely all I've ever known.

THanks for the suggestion,
Zack.

You can buy a USB numeric keyboard. Accountants use them all the time.

26. Got me beat by one week. I always went into the .kbd file and moved around commands so they would fit my style better. I'm sure you could do something similar... or like cttw said, they have usb keypads. Good luck, man.
