How are the rogues today?

I'm pretty new to this game and after losing a handful of rogues to the cold grasp of death, I decided to check what experienced people think about this class and how to play it. It seems to me, however, that there are no up-to-date guides for Rogue and I've read they were substantially reworked recently. Is there anyone who can give me a few tips on how to survive with a rogue and what talents/races(Shalore seems to always be the answer here, but still)/gear should I use to increase my chances?
