Learn to Mod ToME!

Hey everyone. I recently decided to pick up another programming language, and since it's always easier to learn when you have a goal in mind, I choose Lua so I could do some tome modding. I can learn the basics of the language on my own fairly easily, but I was wondering if there was any advice on how to get good at working in the tome engine. I've already looked at the the hooks page on the wiki, as well as some random mods, but is there any better way to learn than trial and error? Plus any tips would be nice. Thanks!
