My most frustrating death of the year

Hello everyone! I'm used to dying, most of the times because I'm not patient and rush things, but not this time and I guess this is why I come to vent on the forums

I was playing a halfling skirmisher, level 25, in nightmare/roguelike (didn't manage to win in nightmare yet ).
In Daikara, just before level 20, I had found almost at the same time the burning star and an escort who teached me Track. From this point onward I played slower, mapped everything and understood just how powerful this was. 8)
At level 21 I found the Untouchable. I was already seeing the rest of the west being a breeze with this wonderful armor and the rest of my stuff being very good already (60%+ resist in confusion and stun among other things).

Then I went to Celia's crypt and that's when it happened.

I open a coffin and this Bone Giant pops up. I look at it a bit, see nothing that I can't handle. I use Bash and Smash to put up a little distance and that's when the shit hit the fan.

I push him back and my projectile is in the air, waiting. He uses blast which deals me 331 of my ~700 HP and the Untouchable decided not to activate a shield for reasons I don't get.

The blast pushes me directly into my projectile from bash and smash. Trained reactions (level 5 of course) activates and reduced the damage by about 15-20%, can't remember the exact percentage it had, but still no signs of the Untouchable. :?

And of course I had gotten a crit. And I still get 467 damage from myself. Causing me to die with approximately -30hp. :x

And that concludes my most frustrating death of the year, thanks for reading all this, and if you have any idea of how I could have avoided that don't hesitate to say so. I'll feel better if it was clear it was my screw up and not the game decided I had too many nice things in this run.

Silver lining : yay! I got a new achievement!

I never knew that this is even possible.. getting pulled into your own projectile. But then again, I am relatively new and playing Time Warden (a Time Warden skill causes all your projectiles to pass through friendlies).

So .. is it player error? Yes, you should of played as a Time Warden , and this could never happen. Also, you could of used a 200% speed sling .. I do have a normal win with skirmisher , and also played nightmare with skirmisher and died to some Pride bosses/uniques, and your experience proves how useful a 200% speed projectile weapon is :-P

In all seriousness, you just got incredibly bad luck with the rng. Astronomical odds against that happening , I would say.

This happened to me a lot when playing Archer/Skirmisher. Enemies that have a pull skill like Bone Grab or Abduction can pull you in front of your own projectile because the pull happens immediately, but projectiles have a travel time based on their speed. The same thing can happen if they use Dark Portal on you.

Same thing with some corruptor spells. It's not a low odds event, really. While it may not happen many times, it's guaranteed to happen a few times in a game, it's just a matter of waiting for a mob with one of the multiple pull skills. I too have been a fool of a took. :)

The Untouchable only activates the turn after the damage is taken, since his attack and you getting pulled in your own shot was in the same turn it didn't activate.

Underestimating a unique bone giant was definitely wrong.
So was assuming that The Untouchable was going to save you from anything. :P

A shield or heroism inscription was needed.

Hah yeah I had similar stuff happen all the time when I was running that Meteoric Madness run, although it was often me running into the missile by mistake. Usually I would kill something with the first or second Earthen Missile and I was already at about 250% move and then when step up kicked in or if something shot at me and made the brawler speed increase happen and I would be even faster than the missile.

Fortunately Unstoppable prevented me from killing myself without it I think Iwould have killed myself like 30 times.
