Survival against adventurers!

Maybe it's just me, but I find that getting into fights with adventurer parties can be pretty hair-raising. Normally, if my chars aren't well-rounded enough AND experienced enough, they die.
But . . . I get ambushed by a party that was just around a corner. I am a level 13 Higher Wyrmic. The well-roundedness of the character is coming along pretty well: building a shield bashing lightning-sandworm. So, I figure so much for a promising character building . . . and the battle commences.
I end up killing the first one pretty quickly: a brawler. That really helped. So did using a rare reflective rune that I found fairly early on. This char could dish out damage quickly and, thanks to that rune, absorb a good initial attack.
And then, the battle commences in ernest. The NPCs are behaving pretty tough - the battle AI for these adventurers is pretty decent. As soon as I get them low in HP, they back off to heal, and prevent me from shield-bashing-stunning them . . . maybe some of it is just the defaults of AI playing against my build well . . .
Anyway, I'm running out of healing options, getting low on HP as quickly as they are . . . and as I'm conflicted between thinking I'm actually going to survive this and thinking that this is the end . . . the NPCs line up and a lightning breath comes off cool-down:
