This was actually my first ever trip to the Sandworm's Lair, and I must admit it was very very unique. Alas, I didn't survive long before a trip up a dead-end tunnel meant a dead end for me. My dump:

Feel a bit stupid, since I wasn't watching my HP properly, and if I'd just thought clearly I could have phased away. Had plenty of magic map scrolls too to figure out were the stairs were. Was a bit overconfident I guess, since I had an awesome dwarven-steel greatsword and 100% blind resistance (I knew from encountering sand drakes before that this could be handy). On further consideration I might have done well to have Chant of Fortress activated instead of Chant of Fortitude, for the physical damage resistance (I had both from two Sun Paladin escorts).

Out of curiosity, how do others take on the lair? Is it best to just rush through?

Out of curiosity, how do others take on the lair? Is it best to just rush through?

Patience, wait for the worm to arrive and follow it closely. Plenty of Magic maps/Vision. I also don't tend to explore, I just go straight for the next set of stairs.

Yeah, I don't like going in there. Also make sure you can see that the burrower is making a new tunnel, not simply following in the path of an old tunnel. If I have 4+/5 phase door talent, I just use that with magic maps/vision, much less hassle then.

All the above advice is good.

If you're not playing a mage scrolls of phase door are vital as well. So if a tunnel does fall on you you have an out. (Granted phase door scrolls are pretty much always vital but especially so here

)

You really want to get in, get the prize at the bottom, and get out again in this zone. Every single time I've died here is because I went searching for loot. Unless you're playing a mage, stock up on phase door and magic mapping scrolls. And you should have at least two turns to phase away if a tunnel collapses on you.

You're going out of your way searching for LOOT there?
I'm usually fed up with searching for the stupid STAIRS after depth 3-4, usually burning scrolls do speed it up.

Sometimes, I just get loot madness. Especially if the character has had an easy time of the previous zones.
