Seven Day Roguelike Competition

The 7DRL 2011 is just a few days away:

For those not in the know, it's a competition to create a whole new game in 1 week. Generally games made from this are very limited in scope, but often they have unique and experimental features. A lot of really cool titles have come from this in the past.

Is anyone planning to do anything for the competition with the T-Engine? Would be a real shame if there wasn't, since ToME4 won the Roguelike of the Year award just a couple of months ago. Alas I don't know the engine well enough myself to use it, though I will be making a game in Free Pascal.

Actually something like the arena could count...

Yes, it definitely could. There's really no restriction on definition for the 7drl, but generally a very focussed scope is the most important element to success.

I'm considering trying this. Got another day(roughly) to think about it. I've got several quite gimmicky concepts in mind....

I've decided to try and give the T-Engine a go for the competition. It will mean learning Lua from scratch and how to use the mostly undocumented Engine in a horribly brief period of time... but oh well. If after 2 days I make no serious headway then I'll scrap the idea and go back to making something in Free Pascal in the remaining time.

Not sure about game concept, I think I'll have to see how that evolves. Something post-apocalyptic would be nice, but probably more than I can handle. Traditionally all the games I've made are based around one-hit kills, with the challenge being in correct movement and placement and timing of skills. But I have no neat ideas for anything more on that front :(

Anyway, would be cool if there's some others struggling with the T-Engine at the same time as me. We could band together on IRC and curse DarkGod's lack of source commenting :D

You should document your frustrations so we know what to add documentation to. Documentation isn't the most fun thing to do, but I have already added some and wouldn't mind adding more if there were specific things to improve. Good luck!!

EDIT: Oh, and I would be joining you if it weren't for RL obligations... others please do join!

These are RL obligations! ...Oh, you don't mean "roguelike" :P

I have decided on an idea that I shall try, and it shall be called "Doomsday" or "Mineshaft Gap" (probably the latter, since I'll likely pack a few Strangelove references in). Basically explore old mines killing evil Ruskies and mutated horror things after the world has gone to hell. If I have time I'll pack in a real story.
