Do I have to be roguelike nightmare to unlock insane?

Or can I be an adventurer?
I've died too many times to remember now trying to get this unlock on nightmare roguelike. But perhaps it can be done on adventurer?

Blimey, even in adventure mode this is so tough. I have no lives left but am still alive at lvl 40 as cornac solipsist. Off to do prides next, but after tanned. Very tough, but more fun than normal mode.
