Mindslayer

Returning player here, I played this game from a while back but due to time constraints, I "quit" it (it was THAT addicting, haha). But now I have time and been playing it again!
But back on topic, ever since I unlocked the Yeek race the other day, I've been trying get out of the island (and hopefully unlocking the Mindslayer class). But a few dozen deaths later, I was getting a tad frustrated =/ I can deal with the first two dungeons, but once I entered the Tunnels to Maj'Eyal, Subject Z effectively kills both me and the Wayist in under 7 turns (my actual best time yet lol)!
I'd really like to boost my levels, I usually get to level 8 by the time I'm done with the starter dungeons, and I don't thinks that's way near enough to deal with a level 15 Subject Z, let alone save the Wayist from dying horribly. So is there another way out of the island? If not, any tips for me to actually beat Subject Z and save the Wayist? Getting kind of desperate here >_<
Thanks in advance

I unlocked this a long time ago, back before Z had the ridiculous Shadowblade teleport powers. So I'm not sure how useful this strategy is any longer, but I used a Yeek Archmage with high enough Teleport skill to relocate the Wayist to the side of the room near the stairs, and then nuked Z to death. This strategy relied heavily on Z's tendency to teleport away as soon as he got anywhere near me, something which he doesn't tend to do as often lately. Mostly he just likes to play Will It Blend? Adventurer Edition.
Regardless, I think you can use the Rod of Recall to teleport to the mainland after you've engaged Z/the Wayist.

Will try that, thanks! But would Subject Z kill the Wayist again as soon as I reenter the dungeon? I really like to save the poor fella, if I could (and unlock a new class haha)
And looking back, I think that teleport skill was the one that kept on killing me, sometimes in just one turn. All I would see was him teleporting to my side then poof, Eidolon plane for me =/
Playing as a Yeek Wyrmic btw

I unlocked it with a Doomed who used Willful Strike to knock Z away from the Wayist.

Z and the Wayist don't start fighting until you can see them, so that's not a risk.
For my part, I find it easiest to Phase Door the Wayist over to the stairs, as bricks recommended. That still works fairly well, since Z will generally keep targeting the Wayist, letting you drop your nukes on him while he heads for the stairs.

How to cheese it:
As soon as you enter the Ruined Halfling Complex, rod of recall out of there. The Subject Z fight doesn't start until you can see them. Come back when you're much higher level and can kill Subject Z in one or two hits.
More legit method:
Start with a class that has the Spell / Conveyance tree unlocked (such as archmage). Put all your generic points in to phase door so you can target things with it. Use phase door on the Yeek Wayist to get him away from Subject Z. Do your best to keep yourself and the yeek alive and kill Subject Z. This isn't exactly easy.

This method also lets you get the Arena points in Derth, which you otherwise forfeit.

Thank you for the suggestions guys, especially with the RoR one; really making some progress with my Yeek characters with that
EDIT: Finally unlocked it!!

W/ a Yeek/Reaver
Took me a few tries to actually get the Yeek characters out of the island and high enough level to tackle the dungeon, but the got Subject Z first time I entered the room and triggered the event! Thanks a lot for the tips guys!

The only way I could get to the Mindslayer was to do a Yeek Archmage and beeline for a super-pumped Freeze spell. Get in there and then just freeze Subject Z so he didn't one-shot the Yeek Wayist. Usually that bought EXACTLY enough time to beat him down.
There's also a couple of exploits related, though... #1, the game usually only autosaves on area enter/leaves, so if Z wastes the Wayist, just force-shutdown and your save will still be when you entered the area. #2, the Rod of Recall will bring you to the surface of the Ancient Halfling Compound. So you can go out and hunt for XP before going back and digging your way down to the bottom level and handling Z. By that point you should be able to freeze/stunlock/whatever him and ice him in a few rounds.
You'll still need something that can lock him down in most cases, though, because one or two hits from him WILL take out the Wayist.

I opened mindslayer using a yeek necromancer. It was ridiculously easy. Even easier then using an archmage.
You have conveyance to port either z or the yeek. You have strong attack abilities and you even have 10 speed bump creatures just to slow him down with.

Oh yeah, that's a good idea. Never really thought about that since I unlocked mindslayer way, way before necromancer.

There is actually a even cheesier way to kill subject Z. You see, Z doesn't do anything until you are in his sight radius (10, same as players). Even, if it takes damage!
So all you need is one yeek arcmage with one point in arcane eye and a minimum of one point in corrosive vapour to kill Z without any risk at all.
(This should probably be changed..)

This applies to a lot of things, and I agree that it really does need to be changed. Completely trivializes a lot of otherwise difficult encounters (Room of Death, anyone?).

That seems a new and um, liberal, take on the word "exploit"
You bump into a dreaming horror in the ID and the F-de-P sends you to a bizarre world you've never seen, where you do reduced damage to a beastie which ignores your attacks anyway. After multiple trips to la-la-land you realize that clicking on your icon among the party will gradually flood the place with yous-qui-ronflent and allow most-times a return to (run away from) the weird guy ... exploit.
Crashing the game to revise an encounter ... something else.
ToME isn't brought to us by Adobe Systems Inc, so nobody with a bulge under their jacket will be knocking at the door - the something-else just risks to lose enjoyment quite soon, like nipping into the LUA files to type "life rating = 100" or suchlike.
