using code problems to your advantage (frozen characters)

Hello, again

I have figured out that it is the frozen effect that is causing the problem! when the character or npc is frozen you should not try to heal, rest or attack with magical abilities as that will cause the game to freeze!

so when fighting wrathroot, scatha the worm (Sorry, know the name has changed for the dragon but I played a lot of angband, zangband and tome235 before this and it was always scatha!) or any monster
capable of easily freezing you for long periods of time you should probably save every 25% worth of damage done to monster and keep yourself on the stairs/entry point!

Fighting boss monsters and unique's from the stairs/entry point makes the battle a lot easier as you can just go to the previous screen heal up and return! when you return the monsters will still be at the HP total you left them at and any special ability or spell effects will still be active!

Although, if you are going to die anyway you might as well do it as it will allow you start over from your last save point without having to go through the character death thing and having to reload your save file!

Also, if you are playing on the insane difficulty be sure to cheat with the archmage town jewlery shop to make sure you get an item with water breathing! It makes the underwater quest so much easier with that item! (just save before you enter shop for the first time and keep reloading and entering shop until item you want appears!) If there is another way to get a water breathing item then I missed it!

I also use this same method with entering levels where you hafta fight a boss or unique monster! So far I have only used it to guarantee an artifact or normal item that gives my character a serious power increase that is usefull to my character!

Goodness, you certainly like exclamation marks...

Reloading from saves is generally considered cheating. Not that I judge you for that - it's your choice how you want to play - but it's not something you should be recommending to others. And why are you playing in Insane difficulty if you find yourself struggling so much? Very few people play on Insane - it's not given that name as a joke.

Escaping via stairs is also considered scummy, though some people do use this tactic. In general I always think that if you feel you have to do that then there's something wrong, either with how you're playing or with the game itself.

Water breathing items aren't that hard to find. A few hats and armours and such give water breathing. And even without it's possible to survive using only the air bubbles you find in the water.

I've been frozen lots of times without ToME freezing or crashing, so there's clearly something else involved with the bug you're seeing. I hope it can be tracked down and fixed, but I'm just not experiencing it.

Perhaps it's about getting frozen on insane difficulty.

I just want to say regarding the perceived scumming tactics. Give a donation and select exploration as your death option - this option is only available to donators.

I'm sure people will 'not judge' you in a similar fashion, but at least you donated.

*waves at all the permadeath players*

Admittedly it's much better in terms of loading than crashing the game (intentional or not).

Its possible that what he is explaining is related to the root cause.

Oh, I should have read it more carefully. He appears to be saying two completely separate, unrelated things.

First he is saying that healing while frozen crashes/freezes the game.

Then he is saying that he save-scums shops and bosses.

Somehow on my first reading I thought he was making some kind of claim that he uses the ToME-freezes-when-you-are-frozen bug to do some kind of scumming. I guess I shouldn't have expected the post to have any relationship to the subject.
