ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

Before taking on Dreadfell, I decided to check out what this "charred scar" place was all about; I had never been there before on any of my other characters. After going through a few levels of cannon fodder, I saw the Grand Corruptor, who was hostile. "Okay", I thought, "this is just another generic boss then, nothing too bad I guess". He then Fearplaned me and tore me apart. I then said to myself, "Well, that really sucked. I guess I'll come back when I'm better prepared". Fast forward a bunch of hours later; I had just destroyed all the Orc Prides and completed almost every sidequest that I found in the Far East. I decided to go back to Mr. Corruptor and curbstomp him into the ground.

Except the curbstomping never happened. For some reason, the Grand Corruptor was more than willing to get buddy-buddy with me this time around and asked for my help in trashing the Zigur. I agreed out of curiosity. His quest then proceeded like I assume it normally would, with the exception that he and everything else in Zigur were scaled to my level. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to attack him after the quest and had to leave in utter resignation at my inability to achieve revenge. However, I'm wondering: why was the Grand Corruptor hostile to me the first time around and not the second? Also, out of curiosity, is he the only character who can send enemies to the Fearplane?

The GC is always hostile at first, and he only becomes friendly later [assuming you choose to be/survive long enough] if your character was created with the ability to use mana, vim, paradox, etc. (I believe stamina and equilibrium are excluded, don't quote me on that).

Any random corrupter-mix boss that is high enough level or just a corrupter adventurer can cast fearscape. Better stack up on fire resistance and shield runes.

The quest triggers if you know enough magic (only spells, corrptions & celestial powers are magic)

It's based on two things: How badly you've damaged him, and whether you have at least (I believe) 10 talents powered by a magical resource (anything except stamina and equilibrium qualifies, I think.) You either didn't have enough talents last time, or didn't damage him enough.

Also, out of curiosity, is he the only character who can send enemies to the Fearplane?

No. It's a Corrupter talent, available to PCs of that class, and any NPCs who uses those talents (thankfully, there are very few, but NPC adventurers will use it occasionally.)

If it's giving you trouble, note that it's a sustain on the Corruptor using it; you can cancel it and escape the Fearscape by hitting them with anything that dispels talents, such as corrupted negation (which can be cast by staves.)

This should perhaps be posted in Ideas but...if you are a Corruptor/Reaver, shouldn't the Grand Corruptor offer the quest immediately?
