ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I'm a new Tome4 player and I've noticed that if you leave a pile of items on a dungeon level or in a town, they will be gone when you come back.

Are there any ways to store items in Tome4? Any locations that will allow dropped items to be retrieved at a later time? Any items that will never disappear no matter where they are dropped?

*spoiler* If you complete the old forest (totally) you get a "house" like place, where you can store items.

Oh this is spoilers. Ok finish old forest. Then take the path to lake nur. Water breathing helps if you see it in a store somewhere. Going across the lake you'll find stairs. The next level is submerged, but has some air pockets. Make it through here and the next is filled with air again. The next you'll face the weirding beast. He has lots of shield and regen and healing runes/infusions. But if you handle him you get your house by going into the next room and feing adventurous during the chat dialogs. You'll also find the ultimate gold generating chest.

But be careful to read all the notes lying around in the Old Forest. That's the key to being successful in the quest...

Is the energy-level notice building up for something fun in a future version, a myst-style distraction with those coloured whotsits perhaps, or does it get fun already and I'm just not that far yet ?
