ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

How are golem stats figured when the character is generated? I have a level 1 character with a golem that has 48 strength. I feel pretty confident I could take out Bill at level 1. Also, I know golem stats go up when you level, but do the golem's stats mirror your own in any way?
