I have I world I've been trying to transfer across many platforms, and I'd like to make rougelike one of those platforms. So I want to make an Otherworld Module, right? I have huge ideas, but haven't a clue where to start. Someone want to help get me started? I'm ready to do all the work, I just need to know how. Is this where I ask? Lol, I've worked on many games, and every time I get to be a newb all over again... If this is where I ask for this kind of help, then I'll start posting specifics, if not, would someone please tell me where to post this sort of request?

Some items of advice to get started:

* Copy one of the example folders and start fiddling with the files in it.
* Read through this wiki: http://te4.org/wiki/t4modules-module-howto-guides
* Keep referencing this documentation: http://te4.org/docs/t-engine4/1.0.0beta21/index.html
* Continue making changes, referring to other modules (ToME4, BOB, Broken Bottle) when you want to add new effects.
* Come on IRC when you get stuck :)

I heavily recommend starting small. Keep your grand ideas in check or you'll never get anywhere. Only when you've made a simple game will you have the experience to make a complex game. Also, keep backing up files you change, as it's easy to break whatever game you're making ;)

Yeah, starting small... I've been told that on every game I've ever started, and while it's good advise, I'm terrible at taking it. Lol. But I will work through this making small changes at first, then slowly changing the more difficult ones, don't worry, I know how to pace myself.

So, since this appears to be the proper forum, allow me to elaborate on my ideas. Keep in mind this is merely to see what can be done, don't bother explaining how yet.

Now, the main world I'm basing this off of has three main stats, HP for health points, pretty obvious what those are for, MP for mana points, used for casting magic, and AP, which is literally used for every action. Levels are not "gained", but rather EXP is amassed to be spent on your upgrades. Humans are the only playable species, but many races have varying qualities. Every race can learn any skill set, but different races learn at differing speeds. To learn a skill set, you must first meet a teacher in the art who gives you the basic skills that you spend your exp on learning, but advanced trainers can be found around the world. The combat is based off effectively TriWielding, using a melee weapon, a missile weapon, and a magic discipline, which players choose to build a truly unique character. Now that's all fine and good, but since I'm translating this to a rougelike, I'm sure not all of that is possible. Or is it? I don't care if it will take me years, but can this be done?
I'd like to keep AP as a cost for using non magical special moves, but I can live without it. My Leveling system I really want to keep as close to the same as possible. TriWielding I can live without, but of course if I can keep everything true to my original idea, I'd be the happiest.

I'm pretty sure you can do all that you described perfectly well within the T4 engine. It's pretty versatile.

Yeah, absolutely everything there can be done in the T-Engine, some of it with notable ease. I like the idea of "spending" xp earned on abilities. Functionally not entirely different from levelling up and gaining skill points, but it has a nice distinct theme to it. I also like your focus on gameplay and abilities.

To start simple I'd say stick to one race and one ability and get a few simple dungeons running. Keep adding bits on from there without overreaching too much. Let us know how you get on and feel free to ask questions :)

Then ask questions I shall. I've read through the tutorial on the site I downloaded ToME from (this site?) but to be honest, I didn't get much out of it. I really have no clue where to start at. I'd have said start with the birth files, but you said stick to one race at first, and since that's part of the birth, well... So where do you recommend I start?

By the way, I use my Droid to post, so forgive any auto corrects it makes that slip past me.
