Central Mechanic for a New Class

This is simply an idea I had that was interesting. The flavor and backstory could be filled-in in a lore friendly fashion, but I particularly like this class idea as an extension of the "dreamer" archetype explored in part by Solipsism.

The main idea is this: you play the game as two characters. Your "real world" character, and an "alternate world" character. Experience you earn in the real world grants abilities for your "alternate world" character, and experience earned in the alternate world allows you to become stronger in the "real world."

The alternate world is a class specific set of challenges that you need to decide when to tackle. Failing a challenge results in actual death. I think it would provide a degree of tension to allow you to attempt these challenges at any time. Say this character's about to die so the player decides in desperation to attempt their next rite-of-passage. If they succeed, the character has an epiphany and wins the battle with his new knowledge and skill. If he fails, he dies. Part of the idea is that these trances or dreams are somehow out of time and represent spiritual or mental growth.

Now with the idea that the spirit world and dream world characters have different abilities come some interesting class options. It might be fun to have skill trees in one or both incarnations to allow a real character to summon his spirit self or vice-versa.

This is just an idea I had, if anybody has any inspirations I encourage you to suggest them.
