I would like to make a finnish translation for Maj'Eyal

So... someone with time to explain where to look at, how to do it, and a newbie-friendly way (I know programming languages, but am too lazy to look at all the code).
My intent is to get kids (roguelikes are traditionally more of our oldies' thing, but I intend to change that - and ToME is a great candidate because it offerse eyecandy too and graphical interface) or otherwise english-fearing people also interested in roguelikes, which have always been one of the rare game genres I've played.
I played them as a kid too, Omega, Angband, all ascii-based, so I'd imagine even today's kids would find ToME's eyecandy acceptable if I chose ascii over Doom and Wolfenstein back then.
So... where should I look at in the files? Are .teaa archives etc. actually ZIP archives or tarballs or what? Where are the english texts located? Would ToME's all fonts support scandic letters like "ä" or "ö" or should I try to avoid using them or replace them with a's and o's if necessary?
I wish for someone to invest some time in answering this in a rather newbie-friendly and detailed way.
Are there already translations to other languages?
edit: already testing translating, now to test if they display as I want them to
