Besides removing the Mini-map and Auto-explore you would have to remove the ability to remember what the Maze looks like; kind of like the Labyrinth portal in Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (which also has the annoying ability to readjust passages while you try and find the exit).

Haha, it's an artifact from the olden days, ToME 2 Maze reward.
The Steel Helm of Hammerhand [6,+20]
A helmet which protects the entire head. The expensive steel as base

I think the first two posters are confusing "harder" with "more tedious".

There are very good reasons autoexplore and maps exist in modern roquelikes. The maze is no exception.

I remember the maze before autoexplore and before the corridors were widened. I absolutely would NOT want to return to that. Autoexplore makes the maze tolerable.

Yeah, removing autoexplore+minimap wouldn't make the maze harder, it'd just make it take 5x as long and way more boring. It could probably do with something to spice it up though, as currently it's just a big series of corridors without anything interesting.
