Critting and DoTs

Something I've been wondering about lately is why DoTs can't critical hit, in general.
(Some of them can-which makes this more confusing.)
Initially, it seems to make sense, because many DoTs, counting their overall damage over all turns, do very high damage.
However, I've noticed two things. First off, many players don't seem to like DoTs-they'd rather have an upfront blast of damage capable of killing the enemy so that they don't get hit. This is a fairly good downside to DoTs in general. Secondly, many of the classes that lack crittable DoTs-Archmage and Paradox Mage are the most notable for this-don't actually have good critical hit building capacity, and would have to sacrifice other stats for Cunning.
I admit, critical Hurricane might be a bit much, but then again, it's a rare DoT that has to actually check Stun immunity. Critical Gravity Well might be really good, but many players actually ditch Gravity Well anyways, as of now. And more moderate DoTs, like Slow, seem perfectly reasonable with this.
And it'd be a nice standardization.
So am I missing anything? Do DoTs really need to not crit?
Edit: On reflection, Hurricane probably shouldn't crit-if nothing else, for Urkis reasons. However, most DoT status don't crit and have good reasons to. It being an exception is reasonable.
