"Universal zip" releases for future ToME4 versions

So, I use a variety of systems and while it's not really much of a problem, it's kind of annoying when I have to download separate releases for different computers I use.

As such, I'm proposing something that I've seen a couple of open source games do - have releases that include binaries for all supported systems.

Thanks, Asmageddon.

It would be kind of annoying for everyone else to have to download binaries they don't need simply because you can't be bothered, don't you think?

I believe Asmageddon is asking for an extra download option to be provided with all releases in one, rather than asking for all the existing options to be replaced.

Ah, fair enough.

Yeah, that's what I meant, an additional option. I believe in some cases it's better to download and use a single 200 or 210 MB zip rather than 3 or 4 separate 190MB releases. It'd also be pretty sweet if there was a portable version, storing saved data in the directory the executable is located in.

Would a better solution be to have the data be one download, and the engine another? That would let you get each option without wasting time/bandwidth.

The thing is that binaries are pretty insignificant in size compared to the data, and having to download two things anyway kind of defeats the purpose of having a single version that can be used everywhere, and it'd also require people to know where to put said binaries. Most of the time when you want a download for your system, you want to install it and get an installer, but when you want something portable, I think I'd appreciate a single download rather than a data download, downloads for 2 of my OS'es and 2 downloads just in case it's not enough.

I still think that a single universal download(preferable also a portable one) would be a pretty sweet thing to have.

I am not sure. Executables (binaries) tend to be big compared to data. A 2000x2000 world map is just 4MB, and that would be quite a large world. Add in other stuff (critters, items) for 1MB and you only get 5MB

Data is the most absolutely huge part of any modern game actually :)
The size is not for "real data" but for gfx, sounds, musics

A portable edition would be great for me at school (windows 32)
