Some trees require you to be level 10+ to buy the talents, but there's no such requirement on spending the category point to open up the tree. This means Cornacs can unwittingly open the tree at level 1 (after spending talent points elsewhere) and not realise till too late that the cat point is wasted in the short term. High level trees should have similar restrictions on cat point investment.

Yes, this would be very helpful for new players. It took me a long time before I could convince my roommate that Cornac isn't always the best choice.
