How much trouble would it be to add the old school running command where you hit "." and then a direction?

I always play the game on my laptop with a USB keypad and, although there is a keybinding set up for it, my laptop won't recognize the [shift]+KP direction.

Is it possible to turn off the "num lock" on your keypad? My game won't let me run or move the cursor freely in look mode if num lock is on.
