Refining floating combat text

There are probably a number of things about floating combat text that could use refinement. Eventually, a series of options to govern its behavior would be nice. (Probably some people would even like to switch it off entirely.)
In my last game, it occurred to me that it would be nice if damage dealt to my character sank instead of floated. In melee, damage dealt and damage received are all piled up in a big unreadable mess, so some readability improvements are in order. Sinking text for incoming damage would help a lot, I think.
