I notice that now our starting points are allocated for us. Is there any chance to change this back and be allowed to allocate them ourselves? They're not badly allocated, but they're not done as I would and I miss the freedom to build my character from the start.

Yeah that's a test, mainly to help new people start right away

assigning level 1 could be turned into an unlock, perhaps?

That's one horrible idea. Seriously, if unlocking the mere ability to assign your own stats becomes a feature in addition to all the other unlocking you already have to do, I'll stop playing this game.

I was talking about level 1, not from every level up

meh, even I dont think that is a good idea. I have a pretty good idea where I want my skill and talent points going, and having them assigned at lvl 1 delays my progress a bit.

You could say that some talents have always been assigned at level one. Every fighter in tome 4 started out with Shield Bash and every mage started out with the Lightning even if you never intended to put another point into it.
Personally I'd like to see all talents go unassigned and get more talents at level 1 to play around with.

This.

The other aspect around this is the splitting into Talents and Skills.
The awful split in the Archmage spells (offensive spells are Talents, Utility Spells are Skills) effectively disrupts any change of getting offensive spells up to the point where they are useful.
Having 1 point to allocate into skill spells and 1 point into talent spells means I can see what is coming and I don't have the means to stop it. It makes it really hard to play the Archmage.

Really, it just means you have to level up more to get the talents you want. Since leveling is so fast in beta5, this sort of happens automatically, but if it slows down in beta6 (as I believe it should), then you might be stuck grinding.
Summoners have the same problem. The only skill category they have
at all is Cunning/Survival. They don't even get a class-specific skill category. It's 100% talents.

Yeah we need more skills/talents.
Ideas welcome

Could also do two talent points given for every one skill (some levels you get one of each, other levels just talent points) until you consider the skills up to speed.

You already get more talent points each 5 levels

I'd hate to be forced into this single archmage build, when before I could've gone into utilities, or I could've just removed sense and focused on blasting. It's bad enough you need ~3 different spells to be continuous on this. I can't focus on an enemies weakness because I've got no choice. My attack is manathrust, chainlightning, flame, manathrust ...

I'm fine with having them auto-assigned at level 1. It helps you get into the game a bit faster. Just as long as it doesn't show bias towards particular character builds.
