How do you balance grinding for loot with grinding for social connections?

Hey, I’ve been grinding away in ToME for hours—but sometimes I wonder if there’s a better way to balance the grind for gear with the grind for… uh, other kinds of rewards. Like, is there a secret to finding good company for a quick dungeon run or a cozy fire-side chat without it feeling like another grind?
