Arcane archmage build is not strong in early game

I played an alchemist and found few items for arcane caster so decided to try arcane archmage.

Human cornac archmage is 11 level and he seems a bit goofy with his spells.
Arcane wortex and aeither beam don't do much damage and shoot randomly and miss while enemies move and even can hit the caster.
While he waits for countdown he has not much to do compared to alchemist who can move with his golem for better tactics or compared to earth mage who can move to weak enemies to recharge spells.

I haven't found topic about arcane archmage.
I hoped for aether avatar but coundown spell and mana cost is high so It seems like spell for strong fights not common enemies.

Has enyone played arcane archmage untill late game?
What advices do you have?

One thing you might have missed in the description of Aether Avatar is that it increases your max mana by 33%. As long as you have a mana surge rune on hand and build will, you should be able to start every fight with it no problem. In the very early game, I like to float some points into the other beam spells so I can actually cast stuff on off turns, but once you hit 25 and get one of the evos (or AAD if you don't want either), you can basically focus on arcane damage alone.

I tried all different mages to fight warding beast.
And arcane seems really weakest and ice mage the strongest.
At least at early game.
Haven't tried stone mage yet.
