Undo and Record-able

This is the summary and conclusion of a complex series of thoughts
observations and experiences over a long body of time. If some
aspect seems obscure, inquire. There are details behind the
brevity.

DG. Thanks for all the work. This is going to get an article all
to itself when I have the coherence to do a proper job of. I think
you are well aware of the unique nature of your project. You have
made an entire hostile environment for the express purpose of
giving your audience the opportunity to be in life or death
control of a burgeoning superhero and nurse this protagonist
through hours of progressively heroic challenges that are
blatantly unfair and dare the pair to survive. You had the
greatness of soul to make this work an entirely open project and
to attract skilled support. You had the good taste to use lua and
c. This project is magic and it is magical.

Thanks for the entertainment of experiencing the 1.6 release and
the subsequent flurry of updates. This was amazingly instructive
to me on numerous layers. From the perspective of the greater game
meta philosopher, its clear that 1.6 caused a restriction of the
money supply, added new taxes and moved many existing taxes and
their loopholes to places even microsoft certified devs couldn't
find. And when you do all these things to a system, it has the
typical reaction, economic train wreck. The poor are devastated,
the rich are disgruntled. I was wiped out by 1.6. I am a poor (ie.
no winners yet for me, chawlie) minion and w/ this release, I
couldn't reliably make it out of T1!

The wealthy (the nightmare/insane/madness players) become
disgruntled - they now have to do stuff different to get the
same rewards they once enjoyed.

I read and experienced this and wondered as closely as I could how
this was impacting you. And wondered what you would do about it. I
must admit there were for me some dark point. As it was 1.6.0 was
difficult in ways that I was not interested in seeing more of.

The changes that you've made and the way that you've responded
made me really understand you much better. This is a forever thing
for you. You have a living design in your mind and it evolves
through your work and its interaction with others.

Seeing this thing as a market, as an advisor, I would council that
you took an awful lot out of the market and its not entirely clear
why. I see some of the motivation, but it looks to me like you
were responding to interaction with zero-sum gamers who have to
min max the way they walk across streets. If its these squeaky
self-entitled voices, as I suspect, that have led to these
directions, then I feel it is my responsibility to present a
different viewpoint.

I represent a very different audience from the zsg. There are only
three audiences. The ZSG is one of them. I represent the other two
- which I'll get into later.

With 1.6, in implementing your vision, you took a great deal out
of the market. Now you need to give something back. I get the
vague idea that you are under the impression that 'new content' is
the thing that you are giving back. While that's true, that's not
really how the market is responding these days is it?

You need to give something back in terms of the pressure that the
tool/system/market places upon its audience. You made hard harder
and, in fact, impossible. It leads to complaints bickering and finger pointing.
The application of austerity always does, doesn't it?

To relieve this pressure, implement UNDO. Make ToME recordable via
an in-game format. Not video. The game will generate a seriese of
deltas that describe the change in state. Its own movie format.
It will be able to play forwards and backwards. You will be
able to select one single moment and place it on the net.

Your project has grown to the point where UNDO is motivated from
many different directions. The size and complexity of the project
will be served well by this change. The debate over difficulty
will become entirely a public and transparent one. And it will
provide the perfect way to end debate over difficulty and
learning. With an UNDO, you can, on a completely tainted run, go
backward and forwwards until you DO understand. No wiki, nor set
of guides can fill this gap. ToME is too much to be learned or
conveyed in nearly any other way. And I don't think this is going
to spoil any ones fun.

UNDO and full-game recording.

Only you can do this.
You are amazing and you will eventually want this.

Merry Christmas.

You can already "undo." Just force-close ToME and revert to the latest save.

That is so far from the point of this post that I shall have to see what others say before I respond.

I suppose I should not be surprised that a poster who decided to express everything in politico-economic terms was unable to say "I have different experiences and priorities from those people over there" without insulting and misrepresenting them. :p
