Ignoring the obvious situation of someone finishing up a run on an older version...
Does anyone play something other than the latest version? Perhaps you liked the state of the game better at a different time? Perhaps your favorite addon(s) don't work with the latest version?
Just curious. I'm thinking about checking out an older version of the game that I used to play on, after checking out the latest version.

Yes, in addition to the latest release, I also play the beta-test version.

I still play with 1.3.0 some because I liked some of the super OP and crazy Temporal Warden and Paradox Mage stuff. I miss OP Dimensional Shift. Also Shantiz on Temporal Warden was hilarious.

"A" run?

Since I build each version in a separate directory, I have the luxury of keeping a version around until all the characters I started in that version are dead. According to my notes, I still have live characters in 1.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.4, 1.0.5, 1.1.0, 1.1.3, 1.1.5, 1.2.0, 1.2.3, 1.3.0 and 1.3.1.

In fact, now that I look at it, I could stand to delete some of those pre-1.0.0 betas and release candidates...
More to the point of your actual question, I've idly considered on occasion keeping v1.0.1 around to play Oozemancers; rumor has it they were badly nerfed in later versions. And now that you bring up the subject, I vaguely recall people were talking about reducing the range of slings post-1.2.0 with the introduction of Skirmishers; did that ever happen? If so, I'd probably want to keep 1.2.0 around for my later Skirmishers.
