Loading Save Game leads to 'new character' screen?

I tried loading up a saved game and instead of taking me where it should, it brought me to the new character generation screen. I had played this character a short while prior to this and it had worked fine.

Now, a bit of confession: yes, I am cheating - I have been making copies of my save directories via the file system. And if I die stupidly or by some boss character one-shotting me, I have been exiting, deleting the now-dead character directory, and making a copy of my backup directory. So I have a number of backup copies going back a few days. It's not just the most recent one that I am trying to load that has the problem, but they ALL take me to the new character generator screen when I load them up, which they weren't doing previously.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Justin

I found out that if I create a new character, save it, then load that save file, it behaves normally and loads the file.

Just a guess: did you alter the name of your saves in any way? I suspect things like this could happen when the game attempts to load a save which name doesn't match its internal naming conventions, or something like a namestamp or checksum.

Yes, I may very well have done that. I would sometimes alter the name of the parent directory, but never any of the underlying files. Any ideas as to where this internal check or name might be, so I could update it to match the current directory name? I'm not sure what the name was that I might have changed it from. :)

Ah, found the proper name with some guessing. Thanks for the pointer!
