Hey,

Im completely new to this game, never played it. My questions are..

Are there specific classes i should pick between? Which one would be best for me.

Are there talent guides? Or do i just choose my own path?

Thanks! Any more useful information would be amazing

You can find lots of very, very useful information on the wiki at http://te4.org/wiki/Tales_of_Maj%27Eyal_Wiki, including some basic class guides (though many are outdated). You'll find plenty of threads similar to yours here in the forums that will offer more advice than I.

My suggestion, as someone who's played the game a lot (but never actually finished it ) is to start with Bulwark, Archer, Alchemist or (if you bought the expansion) Doombringer. These are fairly straightforward and perfectly capable of finishing the game on normal.

A few simple tips:

Doors (and chests and graves, etc) sometimes require an extra click to open for a reason. That reason is often a very powerful enemy who will wipe the floor with you.

Status ailments are more likely to cause your death than pure damage (though that can happen, too). Have ways to clear them from your character. Early game that's typically Stuns, which are a Physical effect.

You can (and likely should) clear all of the T1 dungeons on the mainland (excluding the Dwarf and Undead starting areas, which are only accessible with said races). You should google a map to find out where these are.

You can examine enemy stats and talents by right-clicking them. Until you have a grasp of what these do that may not help much, but it can be very useful in determining if you can safely take on said enemy and what the best way to do so might be.

Vision and escapes are the most powerful tools in the game, used in conjunction with an acknowledgment that there is no shame in tucking tail and RUNNING FOR YOUR LIFE.

You can respec a handful of your most recent class and generic talents (grouped separately) while in a town. This gives you some freedom in playing with your talents.

Above all have fun!

I have a Let's Learn series which may be worth giving a watch if you are up for it. This can be a difficult game to get into and sometimes watching another player can help in overcomign the learning curve.

There are numerous guides in the spoilers section. The wiki is a pretty good resource. There are also videos in various places in the forum, which should probably be consolidated somehow.

As for classes, some are clearly easier than others. I would say play Adventure before Roguelike. I am hesitant to give a class reccomendation as they can be very different in playstyle. A dual wield shadowblade can be very strong, but is probably not obviously so for a beginner and when done poorly can die very fast. Whereas a stealth/staff shadowblade build is extremely easy for a beginner but a completely different playstyle and requires some knowledge you would probably need to look at the guide in the spoilers forum to know, i.e. how to get staff generic, using Light from escorts etc.

I suppose an easy answer might be make an alchemist they seem fairly straightforward(to some extent) and strong nowadays. But again there is a lot of playstyle stuff there, like managing your golem.

Also some class unlocks are quite quick or easy and some are not. For example Oozemancer is an extremely easy class on Normal but is not fast or easy to unlock really.

But no matter what there are many many small important details you simply won't know the first few playthroughs that can be very big. For example many don't know that armor damage reduction is checked before a crit or any other damage enhancers and is therefore much stronger against melee than many people realize. I think there is a thread in the spoilers sections trying to cover little things like that.

Personally, I wouldn't agree. Nothing wrong with dying quickly a couple of times, while getting the hang of the game. Roguelike is the only real Deal :-)

Actually there kind of is something wrong with it from the perspective of figuring things out. If you want to understand capababilities then going back a few times into the exact same situation and trying different tactics is invaluable.

Like I said in a death character report. Playing roguelike only is like going into a tournament or of big game without drilling or practicing. They both serve their purposes. And doing only one only serves to make you learn slower or incompletely.
