Always wondered this since many things can one shot you later on and you have to give up on heavy armor... Or maybe light armor is too weak... Since it doesn't have a strong generic talent associated with it. (at least universaly)

Stealth is viable on Insane if you do it from range exclusively, generally this means you are either being a somewhat gimmicky rogue or some adventurer flavor.

Stealth can be viable as melee on NM if you get a lot of equipment to back it up.

There is a huge difference between ranged and melee stealth due to the extra melee check.

However your armor comments make me think you may be under the misapprehension that stealth has some substantive use as a defense which it really doesn't. It can help some, by is in no way reliable as a real defense either from melee or range. This is true on all difficulties. Its main use is for the crits. And on Insane you get a lot more randarts so the advantages of stealth become less favorable in Insane; you should be able to get to 100% crit anyway so the only help is the extra crit mult which you can get from other skills with less limiation (like Lethality or whatever) or from equipment as well.

So while you may do ranged stealth from range on Insane. Its not the most effective route to take (given some other options) and its never really a huge defense advantage (although it helps some).

I believe he refers to crit reduce effect when wearing heavy armies and the thing where stealth shouldn't work with heavy armor.
