ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

Hello, I just wanted to say how marvelous it is to see a game like this exist. There has been a huge dry spell of top notch RPGs lately. This fact is made especially true by the disappointment of Diablo 3 in continuing the legacy of random, roguelike esque games. Many features of ToME have a 1st class quality about them, namely the interface and class variety/balance. However, after losing 2 characters before level 10, I realize accessible does not equal hand holding.

Living in an age of heavy DRM where games are made with quarterly profits in mind rather than ambitious, creative design, I firmly support a project like this. It makes me wonder if I'm missing out on other titles that are overshadowed by the mainstream. It was only in the last week that I found both ToME and Dwarf Fortress.

I decided against the steam summer sale because I felt it more appropriate to donate to ToME and Dwarf Fortress.

In the age of watered down and shallow games, roguelikes are thriving in the shadows. Check out Brogue and DCSS as well if you want deep and challenging games. Or just keep playing ToME - there's plenty there to entertain :)

Maybe this isn't the best place, but if you had high hopes for Diablo III I think you should really look at Path of Exile. It's an ARPG that's a lot more hardcore with a ton of build freedom.
