I've run two chars now with Cauterise and watched carefully, and checked the log, and cauterise never seems to activate. Are we sure it is working properly? I won't choose it again.

I tested it, it works.
You may however not understand how is works, it absorbs the damage that would kill you and ignores it (and then places a DOT on you).
So if you were at 10 HP and took a lethal hit it'd ignore those 10HP. So you're still left with 10 HP, cauterize on cooldown, any damage coming now will be lethal.

It's not meant to save you from dying, it's meant to save you from huge one/two shots.

If you at at 800 life and take a 900 hit, you ignore it and stay at 800.

ok, I think I understand now.

I eventually died in the final battle with my archmage (http://te4.org/characters/2460/tome/c50 ... 1512bb9e37) and noticed she has a cauterise as a negative effect. so I take this is as the DOT.

It must have saved me from dying a few turns earlier! It was my first serious go as an archmage, so I was happy to get to the end, but I was obliterated. Next time I'll get stun resistance and higher saves!!!
