ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I'm currently playing a Cursed, but I've had trouble with these guys while playing other classes - Berserker, Doomed, and Necromancer.

While probably confirmation bias, it feels like I get a rare (guy with purple outline, but not ornate like the bosses?) oozemancer every level. And I find it so hard to deal with them. They give me more problems than the bosses.

I would very much like some general tips on dealing with them. Or just for someone to tell me I'm not alone.

Other than these things killing all my characters, I love this game. I'm very new to roguelikes, so maybe I may just be missing something simple. I try to get lots of constitution and good armor. Though, I have been neglecting saves on this run - any particular save which would help me here?

Part of the problem is that oozemasters, both player and enemy, are massively overpowered right now.

As for fighting them:
keep a watch for the mucus poison effect on the ground, it does a ton of damage if you walk on it.
some way to remove poison is also very handy (one of those totem thingies is probably the best, or a physical wild infusion)
if they summon a bunch of bloated oozes, it might be best to disengage until they time out, as they will absorb a ton of the damage you do to the actual rare, and can be hard to kill.
and in geneneral, just blow everything you have to kill it quickly, before it can throw out too many of it's abilities (not the easiest thing to do I guess...)

Nature resistance and ranged attack, like sling or bow.

The obligatory snarky answer is that the best way to deal with Oozemancers is to wait for patch 1.0.2.

A necromancer at least should be able to take them on: nuke them with ranged spells, and stay well clear of their AoE effects.

Remember that they are basically casters, so you want to disable them rather than just trying to tank their damage.

Hard to say what to do generally. On Shadowblades I tend to use Arcane Eye to gauge whats around the corner or behind doors, and if I see something like an Oozemancer I use Ambuscade until it dies. Stuns help and range helps, although range not as much since their ridiculous DoT abilities have a good range to them. If you can teleport, use it. If you have a ton of healing abilities and the Aegis tree abuse the hell out of it to soak up the damage.
