Do mobs get an attack/action as soon as you appear?

This seems to happen to me when I am using auto-explore, which is annoying because I am lazy and I love auto-explore. Whenever I am playing a fragile class and autoexploring in a place like dreadfall, I will end up rounding a corner and then getting one shot. I can never tell exactly what happened (the message log isn't that helpful) but I guess the mobs get an attack/action as soon as you appear? Is this only with auto-explore? It gets exhausting summoning around corners all the time :)

Yep, you step around a corner, expending your energy, then everything that gets a full tank before your next move takes a swing at your nice, baseball-like head. There are a few solutions:

1) Increase your Constitution, so you survive the initial hit
2) Increase your movement speed, so when you step around that corner you don't spend enough energy to end your turn
3) Get some shielding runes and put them on autocast

Interesting addendum-- if they don't have enough energy to act before you step out of sight, they don't even realize you exist.

Hmmmmm.... Is this exploitable with insane levels of speed? (Step around corner, shoot them, step back around corner before they get enough energy to act.) I sense gimmick builds coming...

There are zero-time damaging moves, such as Virulent Disease. Not to mention "around-the-corner" ranged area spells.
