What is the "ego multiplier"?

Can someone explain what "ego multiplier" means in the item descriptions?
I understand that "ego" is just another word for "ability" and that each item can have two (prefix and suffix). What is this multiplier multiplying?

The values of the ego. For example, a blazebringer's voratun greatsword will average about 1.5x the speed boost of a voratun dagger (because 1.2/0.8=1.5)

Pretend I have never played this game before.
I don't think that the ego multiplier is exclusively related to weapon speed, otherwise wouldn't it just be called a "speed multiplier"? Or is that really all it is? Are you saying it multiplies the effect of the "ego" on the weapon? Are "egos" then not variable across the same type? Does the ego "of fire" have the exact same value every time you see it on an item? Anyway, I still do not feel I understand what you are talking about. Perhaps the problem is that I don't actually understand "egos". I thought I did after reading the wiki and watching Mirthless' videos but obviously I am still missing some pieces to the puzzle here.

Ego multiplier increases/decreases all of the bonuses from egos.
To clarify phantomglider's example: a Blazebringer's dagger will give + 1-4% global speed, a sword will give + 1-6% global speed, and a greatsword will give + 1-8% global speed (or there about).

You were missing knowledge of the blazebringer ego, mostly. It has a global speed boost, and given that they're of the same item level and the RNG landed on the same place otherwise, a 2handed blazebringer will have 1.5x the global speed boost that a blazebringer dagger has.
Basically, the ego multiplier multiplies the bonuses the ego gives. For example, all other things being equal, a weapon of, say, the mystic has ended up with a willpower boost of +10. If the RNG parts land on the same "spot", so to speak, a longsword would have +10, a greatsword would have +12, and a dagger would have +8.
Also ninja'd, so bah. Post anyway!

Okay, lots of replies about the trees, I'll tell you about the forest.
Its a balancing mechanism to account for dual wielders having two slots for weapon bonusses, whereas someone using a greatsword only has one.

I still have absolutely any idea how it works.
So I am using a weapon with 1.3 ego multiplier.
What does that mean?
+30% of what?

Isn't it already accounted in stats part of the description?

Yes. So basically it doesn't mean anything to you, as a player. I'm not sure why it's there. It's not like you can take a dagger and turn it into a greatsword or something.

Transparency is really the only reason. It could probably be removed to declutter somethings but when I added it in I wanted players to know that it was being addressed and that daggers would have weaker egos and two-handed weapons better ones.
Tooltips are getting a bit verbose though >.>

"Egos" are the magical enchantments on an item. The values of your enchantment are multiplied by the ego multiplier. If you were using an armor with a 1.3 multiplier that had an enchantment that gave you a base of +10 strength, the multiplier would turn it into +13. This multiplication is already taken into account in the list of what the item gives you, so you don't really need to worry about it.

I know I wondered the same thing as the OP for many months back in the day.
The Ego Multiplier is a number that is used for internal calculations and I think that displaying it only serves to clutter the UI.
In most games, two-handed weapons have stronger enchantments than one-handed ones, and in this game, I noticed quite quickly it was true... while still wondering about what was that ego multiplier. That shows how it doesn't fill its role. If you really want to share the information, then just have a quick sentence in the tutorial about how, usually, enchantments are stronger on two-handed weapons. There. One sentence that takes 3 secs to read, and you can remove clutter from the UI for the rest of the game. Fair deal I think.
