How does infravision work?

I am playing a character that has infravision of 7, but I can only see 1 square in front of my character... not sure if this is normal or not. I tried doing a search, but could not find a good explanation of how it works.
Thanks

Infravision only lets you see creatures.

Hmm... so I would see the creature surrounded by black?

Actually at higher infravision it gives you a little bit more regular sight radius. You need to stack up a fair bit for it to be a good replacement for regular vision though.

Your "regular vision" radius is the infravision radius divided by 4. So if you had 8 infravision instead of 7, you'd see normally in a radius of 2 (same as a brass lantern).
It used to be feasible to stack up infravision (Wintertide, etc.) with Heightened Senses and get a good 12-16 infravision radius, which would let you see in a respectable 3-4 radius, so that you could remove your light source (Wintertide + spider summon thingy had a net negative radius, so that worked too), and use stealth.
Now I haven't got a clue how characters are supposed to do stealth and still be able to see.

By the way randarts can give you a really ridiculous infravision radius. I once found a light that had infravision 22(think it was burglarx3). If there had been any way to pick up stealth I would have been highly tempted.
Telepathy works the same way. It just shows you the creature without anything around it.
