New to ToME

Hi, I've never played a Rogue-like game before but saw ToME on RPS and liked the look of it, been playing all day and I'm really enjoying it - but I have a question:
What aspects of the game are randomised, I've only played a Cornac Bulwark so far so I'm not sure if race/class has an effect here - but from what I can tell, quests and NPCs are generally the same but area/dungeon layouts, monsters and loot are all random.
Also, this might be a spoiler but: I came across a trap-door where someone called for help, I went on down and found them held hostage (By a assassin) got killed pretty handily by him and his minions and got sent to "wherever it is you go when you die" asked if I could be sent back somewhere else, ended up on the world-map again and apparently I succeeded at the quest - I'm not sure what that was about, is it meant to happen that way? and was that encounter random?
A couple of other things while I remember:
1. Is there somewhere I can store my sweet loot? I have heaps of cool stuff I don't wanna sell, but it's taking up all my encumbrance and
2. Are quests such as finding ingredients for the alchemists actually timed? Will I fail if I take too long to get back to him with what he wants.
Anyway, the game's great fun and is a real different experience for me - I'm finding it like a sort of, turn-based Diablo-style game. Good stuff.
Thanks.

Exactly right.

Hum, seems like a bug! The encounter is randomly found between certain character levels, and can be fairly tough.

There's a player house of sorts to be found alter in the game, but nothing early on. You have to get used to throwing things away :) I generally travel very light in the game myself, and can't be arsed keeping optional gear.
2. Are quests such as finding ingredients for the alchemists actually timed? Will I fail if I take too long to get back to him with what he wants.
That's not timed - take as long as you like with it. Some other quests are tied to your character level, but no central ones.

You can also store stuff in vaults. (Those are the areas behind the doors that ask if you really want to open them.) Items dropped there don't disappear.

When you complete one of the alchemist quest another alchemist's potion will automatically get completed. This isn't timed. The first time I did these quests I remembered thinking I had not completed the first fast enough and missed the chance to complete a part of the quest. Because of this, if there is one potion you really want I would recommend waiting to turn that one in before you turn in the others.

The Eidolon will always send you back to the world map if you ask to go "somewhere else" (except for event sub-dungeons, such as the damp/dark caves, in which case he sends you back to the "main" dungeon). You only "completed" the quest in that you escaped the tunnels; you don't get any of the associated rewards (which can be very good), and you don't get to try again. Asking the Eidolon to "send you back"
without adding that you want to go "somewhere else" puts you right at the exact spot where you died and lets you give it another shot.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I think what happened with that dungeon/merchant/assassin thing was a bug, 'cos I'm pretty sure it said I succeeded (Merchant thanked me, gave me 30g or something) - maybe I should put it in bug-report somewhere?
and thanks for the tip about those vaults, I'll keep that in mind - though I'm trying really hard to not hoard with my new characters and besides, I'm kinda scared of opening them doors now - last time I did a lvl 24 Skeleton dude popped out and destroyed me, it was tragic : P
In any case, I'm having so much fun - this game is great, I've lost a fair few characters so far lol. My latest one is going really good though and I found some sweet treasure in the first dungeon:

Also, any tips of stat/talent point distribution is welcome. As it is I'm just going with the flow : ) hoping it works out.
Oh! I just remembered, is there some way to stop those NPCs for escort quests (those random ones that pop up) from being so crazy - they just wander off and don't follow me at all, and get themselves killed.. It's terrible.
Thanks again : D

Yeah, sounds like a bug. You can submit bug reports on this forum:
http://forums.te4.org/viewforum.php?f=42 (Make a new thread for every bug you find)

If you right-click on them you can ask what general direction they're heading and tell them to wait a while. Enemies tend to spook them badly though.

Thanks, I think I understand a bit better about those Escort quests now - on my latest character I've managed to succeed at 2/3 I've come across : )
