No spears?

I noticed that while tome4 has swords, axes, maces, and knives, it appears to lack spears! Is this an oversight or an intentional design decision?

What would spears add to the game?

We have tridents. Good enough, I say.

Verisimilitude. Also, the orcs in the main screen are wielding spears .

I get what you mean that it wouldn't add much *mechanically*(there were plans to differentiate weapon types more in the past but apparently nothing was done), but not having spears when we have swords, axes, maces, daggers, staves... is just weird.

The only reason I can think NOT to have spears is that most of the time they are part wood, part metal, so having them named afer the metal tiers only might feel slightly weird. But it's a big stretch.

Except that they're Exotic so how many players actually bother to use them?

Spears aren't much used for single person fights - tactically they are better for groups, as that seen in the opening picture. They are not so suited so solitary adventurers.

Also there's enough lack of variety between the existing weapon types. Let's not add more fake variety.

More exotic weapons could be nice though and adding single instances of exotic weapons to the artifact table doesn't cause as much drop pollution as a whole new weapon type would. In other words, they could spawn much like whips do.

The big draw back to adding spears is that Shockbolt would need to create new tiles for the player doll (in other words, not just one tile but several tiles so it looks right when it's equipped).

But a reason to learn exotic weapons would be cool. Granted, the more reason we have to use it the more needed a non-random means of learning it becomes.

Seems like the staff pose could be used/adjusted. I'd definitely like to see more variety between weapons, just like an ego onto themselves (but much broader and less critical). I don't know about a range-2 melee weapon, though. That would probably be too good, unless it was only on regular attacks.
