ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I'm playing beta38, from scratch, and the behavior of our novice mage friend isn't the same as under B37.

I can't seem to give him any (regular) magical items. Specifically, I have a staff in my inventory, but no idea how I'm supposed to turn it over to him. Artifacts seem to be a different story.

Any idea what this is about?

They changed the quest. You have to give him an arcane-powered artifact now. So Skullcleaver works, but random chaff staves don't anymore.

The text in the list of quests, however, is defective -- there you still have that he is looking for staffs and jewelry and has a 0/10 listed there.
