Bored, so why not do a little competition here :)

Settings: Normal/Adventure or harder

Allowed classes: all classes allowed
Allowed races: all races allowed

Goal: get as far as you can... but no assigning stat or talent/category points, not even the first ones you get.

Evil? yeah, but it should be fun to see how far people can get.

I would say no, however the game starts you off you have to stay with till you die :)

you can use items though (and they will probably be your mainstay.

Let me be first to the high score list with a level 6 halfling anorithil. The Trollmire is a cakewalk to a wizardly type. Prox put up a fight, but I eventually wore him down and picked up Kor's Fall. I was very happy, until I realized that I couldn't wield it with my low Magic, and probably never would. I headed over to Kor'Pul and found a sun paladin waiting for me, along with a million rats. I blasted them with magic while the sun paladin fought off the ones behind us. After a rough fight we beat all the rats and dashed into the next room, where we were quickly diced into small cubes and served for tea by a pair of skeletons.

It's not an impressive run, but hey, first post.

Stats and talents from escorts fair-game?

Cool idea! I've given this a whirl and gotten off to a surprisingly good start:

http://te4.org/characters/363/tome/b6c4 ... 2939fd6464

Higher Corrupter, named "Lemming" (showing my lack of confidence in achieving success). I've completed all the tier 1s apart from the Rhaloren camp and am level 12. Oh, and saved all 3 escorts I've encountered so far too! Some of which were very very tricky, I must say... It's been quite interesting being restricted to just 3 damage skills. Vim recovery has been quite difficult, especially against bosses (I had to level up a bit and buy a staff of ruination to defeat Norgos). I've been doing lots of scumming running round corners sniping people. Hex of Pacification is immensely handy for this tactic... Ooh, and I've found the blood of life, woo!

Can we spend cat points on rune/infusion slots? If so I'm a little unsure as to what to put on the char. Maybe another regen - can never have too many... Or a shield if I can find a good one.

Yep :)

I would probably say no using the cat point to get an extra rune/infusion slot as spending them to improve your talents is already against the rules.

Hmm, shame, though it makes sense - no improving your characters innate abilities from the start of the game, all improvements have to be external. On that note I presume stat potions from alchemists are okay?

Well my Higher TW was short-lived. There is no online character sheet because I was play-testing the new hex-grid, but here is a brief run down of him. Cleared Trollmire and the Norgos Lair with no major problems, particularly after I picked up some nice egoed weapons and a phase door rune. The shade in Kor'pul was my undoing, though. I managed to close to melee without too much damage, but failed my stunning blow and then my phase door failed to take me to the other side of the barrier. It was a risky move and I should probably have just hammered on the shade a bit more. Oh well, it was fun! How is your character doing, Shoob?

So I guess Shoot is fair-game? That's going to make some classes much more playable.

As a full-blown challenge, this could be changed to only allow point assignment every ten levels.

Edit:

Made it to (almost) level 8 with a Shalore Reaver before my first death. Got cornered by a bunch of worm masses who kept putting me off-balance while I was pinned down by a red crystal. Found the ritch gloves and the rod of annulment, plus two lanterns of repulsion. Between equips I had over 1/turn life regen, which was nice. Unfortunately I never found any ego'ed one-handed weapons. I should have bought some. My hope that Rend would work with sling + offhand was misplaced; it only hit with the one weapon. Still, having a free ranged option was nice. The ritch gloves were great for those high-defense enemies.

I'm level 13 now, completed all starter zones. Tried taking on the Maze and struggled through most enemies till I got to the boss, who proceeded to kill me. Thankfully I had the Blood of Life! So I've now retreated and will take on the Old Forest instead. I can see this challenge getting into the straight out impossible territory very soon though.

And dead... Wrathroot did me in. I was level 14 by the end. Old Forest was pretty easy overall, but repeated freezes and stuns meant I had little chance. A big problem with the choice of corrupter was running out of vim all the time. Against a high HP boss it's impossible. I had him down to 40% or so before running out of options, and then kept getting repeatedly frozen. Ah well, was fun whilst it lasted.

I've gotten several characters up to lvl 12, but once you clear the starting zones it does get much harder. I went corruptor for one, and archer for another. Still, it is interesting seeing that you can get fairly far without investing in anything. Hey, I even got an insane character up a few lvls before I died :P
