ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

This question has absolutely no relevance to gameplay but I just always wanted to know what stralite and voratun look like and where they come from. I spend way too much time playing this game.

They're the pretendese words for polyurethane and bauxite.

The game used to have "galvorn" and "mithril" during the Tolkien setting. As DarkGod wanted all Middle-Earth stuff removed these had to go too. So he asked for ideas on IRC, and stralite/voratun were two names I plucked out of the air.

If you want descriptions plucked out of the air I can do that too:

Stralite: This dark metal can only be mined in areas known to have been hit by falling stars. The dwarves long ago discovered the secret to mining the ore and smelting it with iron and lead to produce thick sheets of incredibly durable material. It is also supremely receptive to arcane infusions, making it favoured amongst the Shaloren, though they find it ugly and oft coat the final product in gold or furs. Rogues and outlaws on the other hand greatly enjoy the dark, dull appearance of the material, and the assassin king Mathiel in the Age of Dusk is well-known to have ascended to power wielding a pair of poisoned stralite daggers.

Voratun: Legend has it that this metal is made from the blood of fallen gods, seeped deep into the roots of Eyal many millennia ago. The dwarves jealously guard any sources of it, and dig long and far in hopes of finding more. It is a shiny metal, similar in appearance to silver or platinum, but far more durable. Unlike stralite it is supple as well as strong, and at extreme temperatures becomes fluid and easy to work with, such that the dwarves say "it dances beneath the hammer". Pure voratun is immensely rare, and most marketed voratun items typically contain less than 10%, the rest being made up from steel or cobalt. It is said that the dwarven elders possess weapons and suits of armour made from pure voratun that are worth all the rest of the treasures of Eyal put together.

I tend to think of them as
Stralite - Starlight. Similar to Grey's nice idea.

Voratun - voracious. 'Nuff said

Perhaps there should be an Encyclopedia of Maj'Eyal somewhere in the game, either available in the main menu or discovered as pieces of lore. It could include definitions of Eyal-specific objects and creatures, and some information about important places and historical figures.

This gives me artifact ideas, especially the last part about Voratun.

That's already a work in progress. ;)

Voratun is also more consistent than mithril. Mithril was very light metal, and strength requirement for it would be strange for it. Blood of gods on the other hand could be very heavy.

That's just a legend of course. Everyone knows there are no gods in Maj'Eyal... ;)
