ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

so figured i would try this talent out, and am scratching my head as to what it actually does. I've tried putting the eye in a different room, figuring i would see monsters out of my normal LOS, but it doesn't seem to do that.
What do you folks typically use this talent for?

[EDIT] nevermind, got it to work. So you vision, then cast the eye into the room to check everything out.

It's melee range only, remember, and has a fairly low visual range itself until you pump it a bit, and will only show enemies, not terrain. You can put it into a wall or door tile and it will show you what's on the other side - very handy sometimes. It's also great at high levels for putting on a boss to keep track of its movements when you run the hell away.

The "melee range" thing is a total lie. Last time I played someone who could use this spell, you could place it literally anywhere on the level.

That's why I was so confused by it, thinking "well, what good is this?" I, too, had been fooled by the description.
