Elder/Elite Vampire

I am not sure if I remember the monster's type, but I ran into an Elder/Elite vampire (level 248 I think) on level 1 of the of the trollshaws. I was only a level one and had just started the game. I think I select normal for the difficulty. I was killed with one shot. I think that is a bit excessive for level 1 of the trollshaws.
Other than that, I like the game. I have not been able to complete the first escort mission yet.
Also, some form of a shelter where items can be stored without weight limit would be great! Sometimes you get items that you don't want to drop because you might want it later and you can't use it yet (because of requirements).
Hawk.

First of all, welcome! (Well, ToME didn't think the same, from what you're saying

)

Out of Depth monsters (OODs in brief) in starting zones (Trollshaws, Amon Sul) have been removed a few betas ago, are you sure you're playing latest version, beta 12b? If so, it surely shall be reported as a bug. Also, level 248 seems a bit eccessive, IIRC npc level should be capped to 100, so assume you were intending 24-28, which still would be too much.

At the moment there is no such shelter, but I can give you an advice if you promise you won't tell it anyone: you can safely leave your objects laying on the floor in Bree town, no one will touch them

(while they will disappear if you leave them on the ground in dungeons).
Have fun!

I am pretty sure is was 248 something maybe hit points, but the character had a circle and black dots swirling around it. I am using 10b of the engine. Do I just unzip into the current directory? How do I keep the current characters I have.

Unfortunately you can't keep your current characters. I'd recommend downloading the latest version though once you kill off your current characters.

Ah! It was HP count then, not level, that's ok for a level 25 or so OOD Vampire, I assume.
You should really upgrade to the latest version, a lot of fixes and enhancements await you
Yes, you can just unzip and overwrite everything, but I would just delete the old folder and start from scratch, just to be sure. Your profile and saves are stored in a different path, you won't loose them.
Now, regarding the current saves... Backward compatibility is not supported through betas (it will once an official release will be out), so your current saves are most likely to not work upon upgrading and cause the game to crash; best practice is to just delete the current saves (if you're on Windows they are located in folder [MyUser]\T-Engine\4.0\tome\save) and start a new character. If you prefer not, upgrade only once your current characters will be gone for good! [but you'll really be missing some nice stuff in the meanwhile

According to DG there is no level cap on npcs.

Yeah 248 was probably HP not level

While there is no hardcap of levels thecap in practice is there, since monsters are dependant on zone level and the higheqst zone level of the game is around 75

This thing with Bree, and other places, is good for exploring the game at this stage and getting far enough to test it out - along with not having to eat or refuel your light, it changes the emphasis of the game. Please consider leaving some such 'mansion' facility as a noobie option at least
I'm absolutely amazed by the whole T4 thing, what a tremendous amount of work's gone into it. Have always resisted tiles before but these are superb, have a feeling there's no going back - and all the other effects are brilliant. Chapeau !
Very rarely, something trivial will start to go wonky - e.g. telling that a named category rather than a named talent is available again - but that fixes itself in the next session. There's some small things with targetting, it'll default now and again to something out of LoS, but not very often and it's no biggie because if you overlook it the turn simply doesn't register.
I got Jessica the Noldor Archer across to the east but she died quite soon afterwards, the spiders. Should be called Jessica The Shameless because she spent lengthy whiles making arrows under the watchful care of some other elves. Bridget is also shameless but will be going east before long and she's training a bit more with awareness of her surroundings in mind.
Edit ... Bridget the Level 36 Noldor Archer, killed by slimy oozes while gathering cash chez Gorbat ... YASD
