ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I'm rather confused about how stealth works. Even if I am stealthed, most enemies go after me anyway, and always "notice me at the last second" when I attack. Also, it says that light radius is reduced to 0 when stealthed, and I don't see it reducing at all. Do I need to not have a light equipped for it to work? Or does increasing stealth's level make it work more often? The description just says that it can be used when closer to enemies, not whether it is any better or whatnot.

I'm playing on the first beta, by the way.

<rant> I am not quite sure how it works either, it seems like the game makes monsters "confused" (as in wander around shooting randomly) but this does not make sense to me at all, if they dont notice you they shouldnt do anything... the only time they should do what they do now is if you do that when they had already seen you. </rant>

So..... does anyone actually have any info on how stealth works?

Yeah, I wanted to post it under bugs, but wasn't really sure.
