Well, it depends. After I have spent plenty of time on a character who eventually ends up dying, I usually get exhausted of that game for a while and play another.

ToME is easier to survive in than vanilla, Sang and sCth (which are the variants I play most in addition to ToME), so if I'm in a quick'n'furious kill'em all-kind of mood I play ToME (or a module). If I want a good challenge, I play sCth, because it's so different (it takes a while to get used to). Vanilla and Sang I play when I feel patient. All this with exceptions, of course.

As to non-bands, I was a big fan of Nethack back in the day, but I stopped playing it when I found Angband. It's only recently that I have started playing other roguelikes (like Omega, Dungeon Crawl, ADOM), mainly to gather inspiration for a ToME module I'm planning. And because it's fun to try out new playing tactics. :)

I've spend almost 5 years playing ADOM, which is very rich in various game features, quests, mood, and is very easy to learn (user friendly).

Still, there are sth about 6-8 ADOMs in one ToME  , so I switched to it not so long ago.

I owe much to ADOM, but I'll vote on ToME.

Definitely ToME. ToME ain't balanced, but it's fun as hell.

Can't say for sure.. My first roguelike was Nethack, which was the best game ever at the time. After that came Slash'em (pretty much the same game), Dungeon Crawl, ADOM, Discband, Hengband, ToME. Each one of these has been the best when I played them. After a while I got tired of all of them.
If all of these were presented to me at the same time I think I'd pick either ToME or ADOM.

I picked ToME, of course.

I started with Rogue back in '87 or so, it was actually an accident. I had a 'hacked' version, and it was in a subdirectory in some other game's files. I opened it by accident, thinking that it was some sort of patch, and got sucked right in.

I ended up losing the hacked version in various moves around the globe, and downloaded a 'normal' distribution, which just didn't feel the same to me. That led me to search for the hacked version online, with no luck in finding it, but lots of luck in finding other roguelikes.

I downloaded Angband, and that's where the fun started - it offered so much more than Rogue. I won it once with a mage-type and was going for a warrior-type. I was reading the monster spoilers on oook one day, and saw some link to 'screenshots'.

Various clicks later, I saw that among all the 'variants' ToME is the most popular (most chars, most screenshots). Given that I'm quite taken by everything Tolkien, the name appealed to me too. I downloaded to give it a shot, and I don't think I've touched vanilla since. I do go back to Rogue some days, I take perverse pleasure in being killed by Ur-Viles and/or Trolls on level 17.

I don't know anything about 'game balance' and other such stuff - all I know is that ToME a great, involving, fun, and creative game, kudos to everyone involved in developing it. :)

Didn't we just do this?

It's really tiring to see the same old complaints about ToME over and over and over.

Neil: so it would seem, but it's one more occasion to see who are the heretics amongst us ;) Let the manathrust party begin! ;>

furiosity: I dont believe a Rogue module would be much hard to implment as a T-Engine 300 module

The best roguelike... depends on mood. Vanilla & ToME are the best ones, and I voted for the one with less bugs. I have tried ADOM but for some reason it is less fun than the *band family. One option is missing. If you think a module of ToME is best, what would you vote then? 'ToME' or 'Other *band'?

Yup, and when they are dead, either corpse explosion for some good old fun or raise them as undeads to your service!

Undead servants? Ha! I've got Uvatha sitting right next to me. *edges slightly away from Uvatha, who is eyeing me hungrily*

Better hurry up and start the party!

Anyway, ToME for sure. I used to play Z *cringes* then played Sang for a while, which was fun. But when I started playing ToME, I only broke from it for a break (since my characters started dying, good thing I'm getting better) to play other games, like Chrono Trigger and FFIII.

Anyway, great game. Love it.
