Just wondering.
I use two screens

(thanks to the iBook G4 screen spanning)
• One for the main window, with nothing else
• Other screen with:
- Monster recall window
- Messages recall window
- Visible monster list window (w/colors)
- Dungeon overview
I was wondering how you lay out your windows and the ones you feel are the more useful

I use 5 windows:
- Main window in top 2/3 of my screen
- Inventory/Equipment in lower left hand corner
- Visible Monsters in the middle below the main window
- Monster Recall in the lower right hand corner
- Messages in the lower right hand corner below the Monster Recall

I use the main window, message recall and visible monster list. For monster recall and dungeon overview, I think 'l' and 'M' is enough.

I use 5 windows also, the same ones Guest uses. Just laid out a bit differently:
- Main Window in upper lefthand corner
- Inventory/Equipment in upper righthand corner (narrow)
- Visible Monsters in lower righthand corner (narrow; I widen it if there are a LOT of monsters around)
- Monster recall (short but wide) under Main Window
- Messages (short but wide) under Monster Recall
That's all on a 9.5" wide x 7" high laptop screen
The Visible Monsters window is a relatively recent addition for me, but now that I've discovered it, I'm a convert.
I've debated getting rid of the Inventory list before, especially since it's so narrow it's difficult to read at times. The reason I keep it is as a reminder: Hey, dummy, you have junkarts and wands and such, so USE them!

I didn't know I could use more than one.
Usually I play at work so I use only one since it is easier to hide.

In the game (under Win98 anyway):
Hit '=' to bring up the options window.
Type 'W' to bring up the Windows Flags screen.
Follow instructions on that screen. Typing 'y' over a given grid point will put an X over that option (turn it on.)
ESCape twice to get back to the game screen.
Second menu from the left (top of the screen) is 'Window'
Go to it, pull it down, select 'Visibility'
Place a checkmark beside every window you turned on under the options window.
Once the windows actually start displaying stuff (it may take a few rounds), resize/rearrange as you like. Don't forget to save your preferences.

I have 3 windows.
Main window fills 2/3 of my screen and messages are displayed in lower part of the screen while visible monsters use a little window in bottom right corner of the screen.

I use only one, since I play it over ssh without X forwarding.

Currently I have two: the main window and a visible monster list window in the corner that I don't look at nearly as often as I should. That could be just from lack of effort, though; back in Angband, IIRC, I had an inventory/equipment window, a monster-recall window and a recent messages window. My main concern is leaving room for non-ToME windows: I need an xterm to enter notes in my character journal, and for my summoners, I keep a
tomespoil window open in monster mode to do comparisons for totem selection (and as always, We Apologize for the Shameless Plug(TM)...

).

I was just wondering about how many winners have answered "Only the main one". I bet there aren't that many.

Well, I got to about -4000 in Angband, and I only use one window
I'm sure there is someone, somewhere...

6 windows! I must get the prize.
Main window in the upper left hand corner, set to a larger font size than the other windows. Next the main window goes inventory.
Below the main window is equipment, and next to that is monster recall. Then below those two are messages (with equipment overlapping the top) and visible monsters (overlapping the bottom of monster recall).
Or for those visually inclined I have a pdf screenshot of playing ToME here:

Um.... am I alone in getting several Acrobat errors when attempting to open teganm's page?
I used to use the overview window all the time when I played Z. That was on a different machine with a much bigger screen, though.

Well, I am a winner (
http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-browse.ph ... &n=&e=&s=0 *proud*), and only use one. I have not tried more than one window, so I am not sure how helpful that would be. A messages window would probably be handy for speeding up things, so that you don't have to go through all those more prompts, but still can see the messages. Visible monsters and items sound quite useufl too. But I don't think they make the game much easier, really, though they may speed things up.
