World wide idea: An International ToME Meeting!

Having spent more time playing this game, posting on this board, getting to know the players, as well as dabbling as Quyulthug fodder than I have been working some days, I thought that it might be time to test the waters.

How about we as ToME players get together and meet the person at the other end of the '@' ?

I am suggesting a ToME Meetup.

Using the lovely technology at meetup.com, we can easily automate enrollments, invitations, voting on places to meet in each city/country and the like. It won't be a big thing, just get together, have a few laughs, relate our favourite stories, and bask in the common knowledge that we all have accidentally tripped over a 3 Seeker Bolt trap with our fave clvl40 character...

Is there support for a crazy idea like this?

The problem is: there are ToME players in every corner of the world...
I don't think that's doable... :(

Absolutely, I agree with you.

However, maybe there are a just a few in each country/city, and enough interest is generated to get little collectives going.

I'll put my hand up for Sydney, Australia. Thus, it also includes nearby cities of Newcastle, Woollongong, Canberra, maybe even Melbourne. If it's a "once off" I've found people get inspired to come from far away. So if you're in Oz, private message me and we can go from there...

Still interested?

It would be impossible. There have to be at least few million ToME-ers in the world... even if you could get all of the ToME players in 1 city to come to a place, it would probably be way too crowded. Plus, how far will people travel to discuss ToME and stuff when they can already do it without getting up from their seat?

Really? I have been to Slashdot meetups, Everything2 meetups, which are both (relatively) small, disparate groups. Certainly NOT millions.

BOTH of those pages above (especially E2) provide private discussion fora. E2 even provides two LIVE discussion channels (IRC and HTML chatterbox). And I have known people from different COUNTRIES to visit the get togethers. This is an exceptional case of course brought about mainly because of the person visiting the country in the first place, but it is common for people from surrounding cities to congregate at one location.

You can get SO much more across in a conversation than you do in a message - it's the interactive nature, and the ability to review what you said, go back, keep the train of thought going, that makes a meeting different. Compare email/SMS with a phone/video conversation.

I think I am getting the impression that this isn't going to work, so I will leave this idea for the moment. I'll keep an eye out to see if anyone wants to, and might re-invigorate the idea at a later time.[/url]

What's the point of a poll that allows for no disagreement?

Any other South Africans here? I have not met anyone who plays tome /angband / any roguelike that I did not introduce to the game myself.

I'm all for it, I'd love to meet some players!
That is, if I dont hve to organize anything since I'm too busy already and if it doesnt happen too far away(like, australia is too far away, western europe would be fine I guess :)

As much as I love the idea, being a student like I am I can't afford to travel any further than the city I live in, so unless the meeting is in Lisbon, I guess I won't be able to attend :)

In principle tho, it's a killer thought!

Hoom... I think that world-wide meeting is impossible for time & location possibilities, though in one country or even a continent it could come to existence. Personally I'd like to know other fellow ToMErs and I'm willing to go to Paris to meet DG and maybe some others - especially that Europe is relatively small and easy for travelling between countries. However it could be hard to set one date of meeting that would please even the most of people interested in.

IIRC, DG isn't in Paris...

Having had a deep, dark, and hopefully well-covered-up background in fanfic for a while, I can say with assurance (as most of the rest of you prob know already) that boards spread out across the world can and do implement global (very rare) and regional or local (the norm) get-togethers.

Coordination is always a royal pain, but what's new with that? Holiday weekends are the easiest in terms of most folks not working, but the kicker is black-out days for travel tickets, increased travel costs, etc.

I for one would be interested to meet other ToMErs, though my bizarre work schedule would probably preclude my attendance.

I'd do a local meeting, and I'd love to go to a worldwide one if I had time to make it an extended vacation, which I don't right now.
