Is it intended that they start with that incredibly powerful demon sword? Seems like a piece of cake to start the game with.

You think so? I consider it to be rather a handicap; in the early game, a dagger (or main gauche ... ) is usually better.

Maybe they get a good start, but the mid and late game is another thing entirely. The top of the ladder is not exactly overflowing with demonolgists.

The problem with demonoligists is I've never seen an {Excellent} demonblade (or horn or shield). So I usually end up with two (a demon one and an {Excellent} one) and having to swap.
But I'm no expert, my demonoligists have not been too successful (even by my sh!t standards), so I may missing a point.

I'm pretty sure I've found excellent demon gear, but not the really good stuff. For example, I've never found a demonblade of westernesse/Gondolin/aman.
